Collaborative Projects – 2022

In 2022, Landscapes of Hope supported a range of powerful cultural and community-led initiatives across the Global South. These projects span themes of justice, inclusion, self-expression, and cross-sector collaboration, each one grounded in the belief that art and culture can be tools for social change. Here are some highlights:

Gender, Justice, and Power Series
Led by: Social Justice Coalition – South Africa
This series responded to years of state-led military interventions in Cape Town that failed to address the root causes of crime or the needs of marginalized communities. The project aimed to highlight the systemic inequality and exclusion faced by residents of informal settlements. SJC worked closely with community policing forums, street committees, taxi drivers, and local leaders to strengthen grassroots safety structures and civic engagement.
Partners: Inside Out, The Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation, Rape Crisis South Africa

Artistic Digital Fellowships
Led by: Ettijahat – Independent Culture – Syria
This project supported the development of digital artworks addressing freedom of expression, censorship, and other provocative themes. Recognizing the limitations of physical gathering for Syrians, it provided artists with accessible, collaborative online spaces for creation and dialogue—especially those working in bold or experimental formats.
Partner: The Legal Agenda – Lebanon

Making Space for the Differently-Abled: Autism Integration Unit
Led by: ADEF – Egypt
ADEF launched its Autism Inclusion Unit to integrate autistic teens into its cultural and educational programs. In collaboration with the Egyptian Autistic Society, the project developed a training curriculum for facilitators and implemented spring and summer programs that included autistic youth in its creative camps—expanding access to expression and participation.
Partner: Egyptian Autistic Society

We The People of India
Led by: Centre for Equity Studies (CES) – India
Named after the opening words of the Indian Constitution, this project brought together a collective of citizen actors—filmmakers, writers, scholars, human rights workers—to reimagine civic education. It included the creation of popular education books, a documentary series (Living with Fraternity), and a public debate platform, all centered on constitutional values.

Al-Khalifa Urban Dreams
Led by: Megawra – Egypt
This two-week filmmaking workshop engaged 15 young residents of Cairo’s historic Al-Khalifa neighborhood (ages 12–18) in exploring the intersection between natural and urban heritage. The participants produced short films capturing their personal connections to the area’s rich environmental and architectural identity.
Partners: Nature Conservation Egypt, Jessica Jacobs (UK), Vitor Hugo Costa (Portugal)

#IAMLavenderHill
Led by: In Place of War – UK / South Africa
#IAMLavenderHill was a multimedia campaign and art exhibition that uplifted the voices of Lavender Hill residents in Cape Town. The project showcased local role models and created platforms for youth expression, aiming to shift harmful stereotypes, promote community pride, and inspire young people to reimagine their future.
